Preparation Guide for
Moving Straight Ahead Unit Test


Essential Learnings - students should know how to:
• Translate information about linear relationships given a table, a graph, or an equation to one of the other forms.
• Solve problems and make decisions about linear relationships using information given in tables, graphs, and equations.


Additionally students should be able to:
  • Construct tables, graphs and symbolic equations.
  • Recognize linear relationships
  • Solve an equation for an unknown.
  • Find x or y when you substitute in the other value in an equation.
  • Find the slope of a line given two points on a line or given an equation.
  • Find point of intersection of two lines given a graph, a table or two equations.
  • Find y-intercept when given an equation.
  • Be able to use and understand the vocabulary terms we have learned in class such as linear relationship, point of intersection, y-intercept, slope, coefficient, rise, run, horizontal, vertical, coordinate pair, etc.

Focus questions/ problems - students should study by reviewing & redoing the following:
  • The packet with 20 practice problems solving for x.
  • These specific sections from the Moving Straight Ahead book; Problem 1.2, Problem 1.3, Problem 3.4, Problem 3.5 & Problem 4.2.

Shapes and Designs Unit Test

We are finishing up our first math unit, Shapes and Designs. 
The Unit Test is scheduled for Thursday 10/29.

Final Study Guide - Shapes and Designs

1. Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe relationships between 
2. Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.

Review - Investigation 1 
    1. Sorting and sketching of regular polygon (specific to parallelogram and triangle)
    2. Benchmark angles
    3. Measuring angles

Review - Investigation 2
    1. Formulas - sum of angles in a regular polygon (n = the number of sides in polygon)
        • S (sum of angles) = 180 (n-2)
        • A (individual angle in a polygon) = 180 (n-2) / n
    2. Finding exterior angles in a polygon.

Review - Investigation 3
    1. Sides lengths and forming triangles:
        • The sum of the two shorter sides must be greater then the longer side in a triangle
    2. How to create a unique triangle:
        • SAS (side-angle-side),
        • AAS (angle-angle-side),
        • SSS (side-side-side),
        • ASA (angle- side-angle)
    3. Finding angle measures when given parallel lines and transversals.
        • supplementary angles
        • complementary angles
        • isosceles/equilateral triangle properties
        • parallelogram/square/rectangle properties
        • angle sums for regular polygons

Investigation Focus Questions:
Problem 1.1
1. What properties do all polygons share?
2. What properties do some sub-groups of polygons share?

Problem 1.2
1. What are some common benchmark angles?
2. What part of a full turn is each angle equal to?

Problem 1.3
1. When a drawing shows two rays with a common endpoint how many rotation angles are there?
2. How would you estimate the measure of each angle?

Problem 1.4
1. How do you measure and angle with an angle ruler and a protractor?

Problem 1.5
1. In a triangle, what measures of sides and angles give just enough information to draw a figure that is uniquely determined?


Need to Know:
